Lesson 1 Quiz

So you've watched the video and filled in some worksheets but did you LEARN anything so far? Let's find out! Choose the correct answer.

(As you can guess, these questions are the kind you get in the Speaking Test.)

((All the sentences are grammatically possible, so the answers are based on my personal opinions.))

1. Do you like sports?

1. Not really. Professional sports all seem to centre around money. The team with the most money wins. It's as dull as dishwater.
2. Not really. There are too many sports and new ones keep springing up all the time.

If you think there are too many NEW sports that's pretty weird.

But in most sports, the team with the most money wins, and it does get boring.

2. What do you enjoy most about studying English?

1. The thing I enjoy most about English is buying grammar books - the very best thing in the whole world is diving in to a new grammar topic.
2. One thing I don't enjoy is how you set out to learn one thing, like inversions, and then all kinds of other grammar rules spring up. There's always another thing to learn!

I suppose it's possible that there is someone taking this course who thinks grammar is the BEST thing about English. But English grammar is maddening.

3. What time of year do you enjoy most?

1. Summer's the best time of year. There's nothing better than driving around with the sunroof down, blasting Despacito at 200 decibels. Playing music really loud cancels out my low intelligence.
2. Winter of course! All that snow, family time, Christmas presents and New Year's celebrations. And all the little Christmas markets that spring up, selling chestnuts and Nepalese hats and mulled wine. It's magical!

Winter is the best time of year. It's quiet, there are no flies or mosquitos, and you get loads of time off work.

Summer is noisy and idiots are more idiotic in summer than any other time of year.

4. What was your journey here like today?

1. Well I drove here and it's amazing how many roadworks have sprung up in the city. I was nearly late!
2. Well I drove here and there was this guy playing some 'music' really loud at a traffic light, so I got out of my car and broke all his windows while screaming at him.
3. Well I set out at about 6am, which is incredibly early for me because I'm not a morning person at all! But my early start was canceled out by a small car crash. You see, I was checking Whatsapp while driving and bumped into the back of this angry old man who was screaming at some other idiot. Whoops!

Roadworks are a good example of something that can spring up suddenly.

Answer 3 isn't right because although you might set out at 6am, if you're intelligent enough to buy this superb phrasal verbs course there's no way you'd check your phone while driving. Right?

5. Do you think people learn more on their own or in a group?

1. Studying on your own is probably more efficient, but less motivating, so it cancels out.
2. Studying on your own centres around grammar, which is better. Studying in a group is more about speaking and listening. I don't like that. I only like conjugating verbs.

If you really prefer grammar to talking to other people - that's okay! But I think it's better long-term to study in a group.
