Lesson 9 Quiz

What is this lady doing?

1. She's mulling over whether to have a banana split or some chocolate cake for desert.
2. She's mulling over whether to have a banana split or some chocolate cake for dessert.

A desert is a place you go to ride a camel, or find a genie.

Dessert is what comes after a meal. Note that desserts should never include pineapples, apricots, raisins, or baked fruits - those things are all horrible. The best dessert? Easy: banana split.

Why did Commander Riker grow a beard?

1. Stroking a beard helps him to mull things over.
2. The beard covers the Maroon 5 tattoo he has on his chin.

People say Star Trek: The Next Generation has two phases. The beginning, which was bad, and the rest, which was good. And the moment it switched from one to the other was when Riker grew his beard. So if you are in charge of a struggling TV show, try adding more beards.

What is happening in this gif?

1. Joey is cottoning on to the fact that Cambridge's 'First' exam is actually the third one (after KET and PET).
2. He's realising that there could be an animal so good at blending in to its surroundings that we'd never find it.

It always bothers me that First isn't the first exam. What's that all about?

But Joey lives in America, where Cambridge exams aren't all that well-known. And as a native speaker with no connection to teaching EFL (English as a Foreign Language) he is more likely to be worried about invisible animals than B2 level English exams.

What is Taber thinking?

1. He's daydreaming about the pizza he's going to make later when suddenly he realises he doesn't have any pineapple in the fridge.
2. He has just cottoned on to the fact that the joke everyone is laughing at is about him.

Pin***ple on pizza is a crime! "But Andrew, I really like pin***ple on pizza!" No! Even just typing the word pin***ple makes me sick. UGH. NO. PLEASE STOP.

Have you ever laughed at a joke and then realised it was about you? If so, your face probably looked like Taber's.

This guy spent his life savings buying bitcoin. Was that a good idea?

1. Yes. He lost all his money but he learned a valuable life lesson about thinking things through.
2. No. He didn't think through what would happen if the price of Bitcoin fell, and now he has lost his house, his car, and is living on Pot Noodles.

There are cheaper ways to learn the value of thinking things through. For example, you could bet your friend 20 dollars you can list all 70 phrasal verbs in this course in under 5 minutes. No need to lose ALL your money.

Before you 'invest' in Bitcoin, do a google search for 'Tulipmania'.

What is happening here?

1. The girl is doing a livestream and agreed to answer back ANY question for 5 dollars. Now her mother is paying to get the truth about whether she smokes or not.
2. She called her office and said she was sick from work, and now she's doing a livestream (people watch her play video games), but her boss is watching it and now she's in big trouble.

You don't answer back a question, you just answer a question. But it would be funny if that happened.

If you're going to call in sick, you HAVE to think things through. Try to sound sick when you make the phone call, make sure you don't go anywhere you might be photographed, and certainly don't broadcast yourself on the internet lazing around!

What is Alan doing?

1. He's trying to think up a way to lose weight without eating less or exercising more.
2. He's trying to calculate how much money he'll have left if he buys EFL Academy's phrasal verbs course.

There's very little calculation needed if you're buying an almost-free course!

But losing weight is hard. If someone thinks up a way to make it easy, they'll be the richest person on earth!

Why is Buster Keaton famous?

1. He thought up the easiest way to eat spaghetti.
2. He starred in and directed lots of all-time classic comedy movies.

Do a search for 'a house falls on Buster Keaton' if you want to want to see his most famous scene. He really stood there while the 2-ton house fell on him!

What is this man's greatest contribution to society?

1. He has hit on a way to feed and exercise chickens AT THE SAME TIME.
2. He has made flip-flops cool again.

Flip-flops have never been cool/ are not cool/ will never be cool.

By the way, my girlfriend wears Crocs, so you can stop telling me to be nicer to her.

Why is Bob Ross so famous?

1. He hit on a way to paint the light side and the dark side of a rock AT THE SAME TIME!
2. Because his voice is very relaxing and he makes people feel happier.

Although his rock-painting technique is amazing, he didn't invent it himself.

A lot of Bob Ross videos are on YouTube now. If you feel stressed, go and watch one!
